New Year…New Challenge?

The New Year always conjures thoughts of a new start, new challenges, New Year resolutions, with one the most popular being to start looking for a new job or even a whole new career (based on a recent YouGov poll and probably our own anecdotal evidence). There are several reasons the New Year is a good time to start looking so I have outlined these for you:

  • Budgets: The good news is companies have the same thoughts as you and they will start actively recruiting as this is the start of their financial year so new budgets are in place for recruitment (or are in the process of being approved).
  • Be organised: Compile a list of companies you would like to work for and ensure you are actively checking their websites regularly to ensure you know if they are recruiting. Monitor recruitment and jobs websites regularly and even select to get job alerts.  Also, follow the company on Twitter, Facebook and especially LinkedIn as they will post new jobs and any company updates (which would be useful for interviews).
  • Have your documents ready: Don’t be rushing around at the last minute updating your CV and organising your LinkedIn. Have them ready so as soon you see that job you can apply straight away. This means you can move quickly which can be helpful if the job has a short application window or you do not see it until short notice.
  • Be aware of the hidden job market: Remember not all jobs will be advertised so ensure you find out who the key contacts are within each organisation and send them your CV speculatively.  You never know what jobs might be on the horizon that may be perfect for you.
  • Be positive: You may hit a few brick walls but don’t give up easily.  See it as a way of increasing your network and getting your name out there and eventually the right opportunity will present itself.  No one said it would be easy getting a great new job.
  • Look for opportunities with your existing employer:  If you are happy with your current employer then perhaps you can explore for new opportunities to progress within this organisation. That might be to take on a new challenge, role, or develop your skills and expertise further. Think about what you would like to achieve in the next year and perhaps request a one-to-one with your line manager so you can discuss your personal development plan to assist you in achieving your potential.
