As AI technology is continually expanding on what seems to be a monthly basis, the urge to input a basic outline of your professional experience to date and receive your “shiny” new CV + Cover Letter minutes later does sound very appealing. This is particularly the case as the competitive nature of the job market currently makes every application process daunting and potentially disheartening.
Spending hours working on preparing your documents only to have them rejected without reasoning is deflating. Yet, we would still strongly urge against the use of AI for career-based documents for a number of reasons.
Why you shouldn’t rely on AI
- As you would expect, computer-generated documents lack authenticity and will not convey personality when describing your career progression. Despite AI-generated content appearing polished and grammatically correct, it often comes across as robotic and lacking the personal voice that employers want to hear. Integrating your personality through the use of your preferred writing style will better highlight your genuine enthusiasm and make a lasting impression on the recruiter.
- The systematic and quite rigid nature of AI-generated text is also not difficult to highlight. This is especially the case as more people submit AI-generated documents, making it easier for recruiters to easily navigate and discard those without consideration.
- The most important aspect to the application process that AI doesn’t account for is tailoring your document to a specific role. We know that those who take that extra time to highlight a distinct interest in a role and company stand the greatest chance of success. This is primarily achieved in the CV by aligning your document with the core elements of the job description, mainly in the Professional Profile and Key Skills sections. The cover letter should similarly outline your suitability and aspirations pertaining to that role/company.
This manual approach to crafting your document following analysis of the job posting and research of the organisation just cannot be replicated. While AI can provide well-structured templates and outline your experience in a general manner, it cannot tailor adequately to specific job descriptions.
Finally, preparing your own documents allows you to reflect on your achievements and skillset, especially in alignment with the roles you are applying for. Although perhaps not directly helpful during the initial stage of the application, it can also offer benefits should you progress to an interview setting by helping you expand on your own words in greater detail if asked.
As a result, and while AI can be a helpful tool in checking grammar and formatting, it should not override the importance of a human touch and personal effort in CV + Cover Letter writing.
